Cervical Pain
Cervical pain refers to pain felt in the back and side of the neck, upper shoulders, and very often the back of the neck and head (cephalgia). It can extend to the area between the shoulder blades.
It is a very frequent type of pain, also among young people. It is usually due to problems in the intervertebral discs, in the joints at the back of the spine or in the musculature. There may be other causes, so it is very important a detailed study of each case.
Cervicobrachialgia
We speak of cervicobrachialgia when cervical pain is accompanied by pain in the arm, forearm, hand and fingers. The cervical pain can be very intense and radiate to the arm. Other times the radiating pain in the arm or hand is so intense that it is more severe than the neck pain itself. It can be very disabling.
It can be due to different causes, but one of the most frequent is the existence of a spinal nerve (one of the nerve roots that leave the cervical spine to innervate the arms) that is inflamed or compressed. The compression may be due to a narrowing of the foramen through which it emerges, due to degenerative or traumatic causes, or due to a herniated or prolapsed intervertebral disc.
Sometimes the pain may be accompanied by tingling in the area, decreased or loss of sensation, and decreased or loss of strength.
It is essential to study each case by means of imaging tests (X-rays, MRI, etc…) and neurophysiological studies (electromyogram, etc…), in order to find out what the cause is and to recommend an appropriate treatment.
